When Virtual Reality meets Mental Health

There is now a way for everyone to undergo mental health treatment in the comfort of their own home whilst also making it more affordable, accessible and anonymous.

..

What is Neurotops?

Her anxiety is Gone

How does life look anxiety free? It's a lot less stress inducing and more relaxing. It's like finally being able to breath fresh air.

No longer fears Dogs

From changing street side when faced with a dog to letting them lick your face, his improvement is one to admire.

So what seems to be the problem? Why can't we also enjoy all of the above?

It's not accessible

Great effort has been put into making mental healthcare accessible over the years but it seems that no matter what, supply cannot meet the demand. With the advent of Covid but not only because of it, we are now in a mental health crisis with many people unable to access treatment due to various reasons: from distance to time wasted in traffic, lack of enough medical professionals, not being able to travel and the reasons could go on and on.

It's not affordable

It's sad and very telling that today, before even considering getting help, people have to think about the enormous costs. With therapy sessions reaching for up to £250 to witch we add the cost of traveling back and forth to a cabinet and not to mention the prescriptions for medicine, it's no wonder that people seeking help feel like the entire process might give them depression instead of treating it.

It's not anonymous

Meeting face-to-face with a stranger to whom you will have to spill all of your deepest, darkest troubles is for a lot of people an unsurpassable hurdle. It's not about the doctor not keeping your problems a secret, it's about the anxiety a lot of people feel when considering or undergoing face-to-face therapy. This is why a lot of the initial process that a mental health professional needs to go through with their patient is focused on just building trust so that the treatment will feel more comfortable.

So what solutions can Neurotops offer?

We call our solution the AAA solution since it aims to solve all of the problems above: accessibility, affordability and anonymity creating a revolution in mental health treatment

How do we make mental health Accessible?

Neurotops focuses on using virtual reality as an alternative to traditional methods of treatment. The benefits of using this technology are many but when we talk about accessibility what it offers is no geographical limitations whatsoever. You can now undergo a therapy session in the comfort of your own home without the need to travel anywhere.

How do we make mental health Affordable?

Making mental health treatment affordable might sound like a distant dream but it is possible with the right tools. Using virtual reality and a subscription model, our goal here at Neurotops is to make sure as many people as possible can afford to get the help they need by saving costs on travel time and therapy sessions in fancy locations.

How do we make mental health Anonymous?

With the use of virtual reality, Neurotops can make therapy sessions anonymous and also as an added benefit, a lot safer as well.. The only meeting place between the therapist and the patient will happen in a virtual environment where they are both represented by cartoon avatars. This will make the treatment process feel a lot more comfortable.

But does virtual reality really help with treating mental health problems?

There are already numerous trials and studies which show how virtual reality therapy is better across the board from traditional methods of treatment. Some of the perks and advantages include:

A very safe treatment environment.

Mental health professionals need to be careful when dealing with the phobias and trauma of patients. Often times they will need to use exposure therapy in order to treat them and there is no safer environment to do that than virtual reality, a place where the danger feels real but it never is.

People more willing to undergo treatment

Surveys conducted among people suffering from different ailments such as depression, anxiety disorders, phobias and PTSD have shown that 40% more individuals would undergo treatment if it was done in virtual reality since it would eliminate the need to meet face-to-face with a mental health professional.

Better and faster treatment results

One of the best methods of treating anxiety, phobias or PTSD is to undergo exposure therapy treatment. When it comes to this, studies have shown that virtual reality exposure therapy treatment as opposed to in vivo methods shows much better results both in speed and in number of successful treatments.

Treatment process is a lot more comfortable

Being able to undergo treatment at home or in any other place for that matter while avoiding the awkward face-to-face meeting with a mental health professional, makes the entire process feel a lot more comfortable which as we know can make treatment a lot more likely to succeed.
